Saving paper in the workplace

As a teacher, I often witness the huge amount of paper being wasted everyday.  I guess it will be the same in other work places. Printing out memos and notices just to be binned the next minute is a very wasteful practice. Some staff have folders upon folders of documents that they hardly look at for months or years.

Recently, there has been a widespread awareness among staff of the wastage and we are now resorting to emails a means of communicating with each other. The only problem is, there is limited storage available on the email system. We have to keep deleting emails and improtant attachments to get more space so that we continue recieving emails.  Does this sound familiar in your work place?

The solution is using online file storage. I have started filing away attachements and documents that I think I might need to refer back later. Another advantage of online file storage is that I can send links of a particular file to a colleague and he or she can access the file online. They can add, edit or make changes to the file and save it there. Thus encouraging collaboration. I don’t have to keep sending the file to various people. All of them can access the file and work on it and save it there.

Last but not least, online file storage can function as a back up storage should the office server fail. This has actally happened to me several times in the past couple of months and I was very fortunate to have my files and documents saved online and I can access it anywhere in the world.

Online file storage is a sure way to save the environment by reducing paper usage and a great way to share files and documents at the workplace.

Energy saving projects

Filed under: Technology — pittan @ 10:12 pm

While browsing the onetoremember blog, I came across a few interesting energy saving projects. One project that attracted my attention was project S.P.R.E.E. (Solar Photovoltaic Renewable Electron Encapsulator) by Charlitron. Project: S.P.R.E.E. is an experiment in alternative energy and solar generated electricty. Watch the video clip below to see an innovative way of generating electricity that can be used to charge electrical devices around the home.

Another interesting project is the Solar powered Trike by dpearce1.

A great idea!

Researchers are finding ways to turn our roads into energy collectors. What a brilliant idea? Imagine the amount of energy that can be collected if every road is turned into solar energy collectors. Another area to research as energy collectors are roof tops. Click here to read more about this great idea.

Are hybrid cars really green?

Hybrid cars Hybrid car

Cars, as we know are one of the major contributors to environmental pollution. The advent of hybrid cars (part fuel, part electricity) has given hope to many people  as a solution to reducing pollution from cars. However, there has been doubts that hybrid cars are actually helping the environment. Recent studies show that hybrid cars are not doing any better than diesel cars. Computers and saving energy

Filed under: Technology, Tips and Advice — pittan @ 9:09 am

“More than 30 billion kilowatt-hours of energy is wasted because many of us simply forget to shut down our computers when we aren’t using them. If we could just improve the efficiency of how we use our PCs, the savings in energy costs would be over $3 billion! The CO2 emissions from just 15 computers are equivalent in energy terms to the gas consumption used by one car.” (Localcooling.com)

The article above clearly demonstartes that a lot of energy is wasted through computers by leaving it on stand by. The same website is now providing computer users an applicatin that will keep track of the amount energy your computer is sucking up. Download the application  and see for yourself how much energyis wasted.
